Yogācārya T Krishnamacharya practising Prāṇāyāma

Yogācārya T Krishnamacharya practising Prāṇāyāma

All tools of Yoga were meant to influence Prāṇa, the energetic system of the body. The most potent among the tools of Yoga to influence Prāṇa are Mantra and Prāṇāyāma. Utilising mantra-s not only emphasises the mind-body-breath connection (a key to yoga practice) but also generates specific vibrations in the body represented by the chant. Each mantra had particular meaning and potency which, combined with the different Prāṇāyāma intensified the practice and formed a powerful alliance to influence the subtle layers of our body for health and spiritual development. In traditional times all Prāṇāyāma were practised with Mantra, and hence titled Samantraka-Prāṇāyāma.

The purpose of this seminar is to explore the utilisation of Mantra-s in Prāṇāyāma and to take it to the next level of practice. Each session will offer the classical description of one of the Prāṇāyāma technique, based on classical references when available.

A detailed description of the technique for the modern practitioner will also be offered along with its benefits and contraindications. A short and potent practice based on this Prāṇāyāma utilising an appropriate mantra will also be taught and guided so that participants can experience Samantraka-Prāṇāyāma.

The following classical Prāṇāyāma will be taught:

Ujjāyī Śītali/Sītkāri Anuloma-ujjāyī Viloma-ujjāyī

Sūryabhedana Candrabhedana Nāḍiśodhana Pratiloma-ujjāyī

The seminar will be particularly suited for those teachers and students, who wish to deepen their understanding and experience of Samantraka-Prāṇāyāma.

It will be most useful to those:

  • wanting to take their practice beyond just Āsana practice.

  • wanting to explore the role of Mantra in Yoga practices.

  • wanting to deepen their practice and take it to the next level.

  • who appreciate traditional teachings and how they influence Practices.

  • who are fascinated by energetic dimensions like Nāḍi-s, Cakra-s and Agni.

The seminar was originally conducted in June 2020, and is now open once again for participants who missed it at this time. You can purchase access to this course and gain insights into this wonderful text.

Through a series of eight Audio Recordings, participants will learn the essential concepts from this text, and discuss its practical application either for themselves or for their students. Each module consists of two sessions of 50 minutes each. The seminar is conducted by Dr. Kausthub Desikachar in English.

All participants will be provided access to the Resource Centre, where they can download the handouts and the pre-recorded sessions, and listen to them at their own leisurely pace.
