Mahaṛṣi Patañjali and Yogācārya T Kṛṣṇamācārya’s writing of the Prayer to Patañjali.

Mahaṛṣi Patañjali and Yogācārya T Kṛṣṇamācārya’s writing of the Prayer to Patañjali.

The Yogasūtra-s are considered the most important source text of Yoga and are regarded as its final authority. The work was composed by a great master, Mahaṛṣi Patañjali, and is made up of 195 aphorisms, in four chapters. It presents the entire Yoga system, encapsulating its core philosophical principles and providing deep insights into the nature and quality of practices, to help us in our search for a meaningful life and liberation.

Cryptic and profound, the Yogasūtra-s can be understood at many different levels of intensity. They are meant to be studied directly with a master, who is both knowledgeable and competent enough to be able to interpret the text according to the level of the practitioner. In India traditionally, students would normally study this text many times with their teacher, to further and deepen their understanding of its subject matter.

It is essential for every sincere Yoga student, and, more importantly, every Yoga teacher, to have a sound understanding of the Yogasūtra, so that they may not only practice with clarity, but also transmit the message of Yoga with accuracy.

The purpose of this ongoing study group is to gather a sincere group of students who want to explore this text in detail.

The ongoing study will be conducted by Dr. Kaustubha Desikachar in English

Mode of Study

The ongoing study will be conducted online via Zoom, and will include two sessions each month. Each session will be about 50 minutes each. All sessions will be recorded via audio, and uploaded to the course’s resource centre, so that even those who cannot participate live can gain access to it.

Each session will include the chanting of the conventional invocatory chants for the Yogasūtra, chanting of the relevant aphorisms in discussion that class, explanation of the word-to-word meaning of each verse and discussion on the overall meaning of the verse, following the traditional commentaries of this sacred text.

There won’t be any handouts, but we will use Truth Unclouded | The Yogasūtra’s of Patañjali as the reference text for the ongoing study. If you would like to purchase your copy you can do so here - www.khyf.net/shop
