Traditionally the shortest day of the year, December 21, marking the end of autumn and the official start of winter, is celebrated as the winter solstice. It is not only considered a time to retreat into our home and waiting out the winter, but also to introspect deeply in the accomplishment of the current year, and preparation for the next. It is also considered as a signal of the beginning of longer days, and hence the gradual embracing of light.

This year has been a very challenging one for all of us, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, and even now, the future remains uncertain to many. It is also essential for us to retreat into our hearts, and reflect on what are our most valuable and vital priorities.

To facilitate this, we are pleased to offer you a masterclass that will combine discussion and practice on 21 December 2020, so that we will also profit from the magical and powerful energy that normally dominates this day.

This masterclass will use the Yogasūtra of Patañjali as the guide and offer insights into the right set of attitudes to develop during these difficult times. A potent practice combining Āsana, Mantra, Prāṇāyāma and Meditation will also be offered, which students can practice through the winter months. Through this practice you will learn to build an altar for the light in your heart, and honour it each day through the potent practice. With this light shining brightly in your heart, you will find a way to reignite your soul, and live your life with light!

The masterclass is open to all, irrespective of level of practice or experience. It will be conducted by Dr Kausthub Desikachar in English. The masterclass will consist of two sessions of approximately 50 minutes each. The first part will be a lecture/presentation, while the second part will be the practice. Supporting handouts and questions for introspection and self inquiry will be sent to all the participants.

Even our friends from the Southern hemisphere can benefit from this masterclass, and they will be advised on how to replace the focus of meditation to suit their movement into summer.

The masterclass will be conducted via Zoom and will be recorded via audio, so that even those who cannot participate live can gain access to it.
