Śrī Yājñavalkya of Mithila is a legendary sage of the Vedic tradition and is credited with many significant contributions to the Vedic culture. These include the Śatapatha- brāhmaṇa, the gigantic Bṛhadāraṇyaka-upaniṣad, the Yoga-yājñavalkya-saṁhitā and the Yājñavalkya-smṛti. He is also featured in some of the major Upanisads as a key personality
One of the oldest texts on Yoga, the Yoga-yājñavalkya-saṁhitā is a dialogue between the great sage Śrī Yajñavalkya and his learned wife Śrī Gārgī. Considered as one of the most learned women of all times, Gārgī poses questions to her husband, on how to reach the highest. Yajnavalkya shows her the way patiently and systematically, through the twelve chapters of this work.
The form of a dialogue between the two presents a rich teaching in a very engaging manner. Through the twelve chapters in this treatise, the entire system of Aṣṭāṅga-yoga as well as some other interesting themes are presented. This scripture presents a lot of unique ideas that can be found in no other text, as well as specific concepts that are different from the more popular Yoga treatises.
A serious study of this text is vital to everyone who wants to understand the key tenets of Indian philosophy, as well as for Yoga teachers and students who want to understand Yoga as a holistic way of life, especially in the classical tradition of Viniyoga. Yogācārya T Krishnamacharya considered this text very dear to him, and taught it diligently to his student and successor TKV Desikachar, who in turn taught it to his student and son Dr. Kaustubha Desikachar.
The purpose of this ongoing study group is to share in a traditional manner, this sacred text to sincere seekers of Yogic truth!
