Patañjali's Yogasūtra III.13 | Explained By Dr Kausthub Desikachar of Viniyoga

Yogasūtra III.13 - etena bhūta-indriyeṣu dharma-lakṣaṇa-avasthā-pariṇāmā vyākhyātāḥ

It is clear that mind can have different transformations. But is transformation limited to the mind?

In this way, transformations in the elements and senses, based on nature, intelligent cause and time, are also described.

The three types of transformation, Dharma-pariṇāma, Lakṣaṇa-pariṇāma and Avasthā-pariṇāma, for the elements and the senses, are described here.

Dharma-pariṇāma pertains to change based on nature. For example, a mango seed can only transform into a mango tree. It cannot become a papaya plant.

Lakṣaṇa-pariṇāma pertains to change that is dependent on an intelligent cause. For example, the mango can be made into mango chutney, by someone who knows how. It won’t happen on its own, it needs an interference. However, it can still become only mango chutney, and not papaya chutney.

Avasthā-pariṇāma pertains to the change influenced by time. It takes some time for a mango seed to become a fully fertile mango plant. Some crops may need less time than a mango, whilst others need more.

In the same way, the changes within our body and senses are dependent on these three factors. Dharma-pariṇāma is change consistent with constitution. Lakṣaṇa-pariṇāma relates to changes based on interferences, like the tools of Yoga, cultural and social upbringing. Avasthā-pariṇāma relates to the time involved in changes. For instance, a girl cannot be pregnant before adolecence or after menopause.
